Hackathon

The BIO-STREAMS Hackathon is a school-driven innovation challenge designed to engage students (ages 9–16) in developing digital or design-based solutions that promote healthier school and their community  environments. The activity fosters community participation, supports literacy in health and technology, and contributes to the BIO-STREAMS engagement strategy.

What we want:

  • Inspire students to co-create solutions that promote healthy habits related to hydration, nutrition, movement, rest, home cooking and wellbeing.
  • Build and sustain a community engaged in healthy lifestyles, obesity prevention and school health promotion.
  • Promote awareness of environmental and community-level determinants of health in school ecosystems.

What we expect from you:

  • A prototype of an app, game, design-thinking solution, or digital tool addressing a school-level health topic.
  • The engagement of schools with local health professionals and technical mentors.
  • Collection of showcase-ready student projects to be featured on the BIO-STREAMS Marketplace.

Participation Categories

  • Digital Prototype (App/Game) Development – Using MIT App Inventor or equivalent
  • Design Thinking Concept – A design-driven solution proposal using mockups or prototypes.
  • Community Behaviour Innovation – Concepts targeting school-wide habits and practices.
  • Data-Informed Idea – Solutions based on school food/activity observations without personal data.

Webinars

You will be able to participate in two preparatory webinars for participating teachers, students, and other relevant members of the school community. These webinars will provide guidance, ensure consistency across countries, and support schools before they implement their national-level hackathon activities.

The webinars will be interactive and practical. They will combine short presentations, examples, guided exercises, and time for questions. Teachers will receive guidance on how to facilitate the activity locally, while students will receive support in defining their challenge, developing ideas, and preparing their prototype or concept.
